The BILT Mastercard has been making headlines recently as the only credit card on the market that allows customers to pay rent.
The card features enticing benefits such as
- 1x points per dollar spent on rent
- 2x on travel
- 3x on dining
- Rent Day Bonuses on the first of each month (double points)
- cell phone proteciton
- 24/7 personal concierge
- valuable transfer partners for points earned
The company is relatively new, given its competition such as Citi, Chase, Amex, and more. Because the company is so new, some individuals have claimed the BILT team is a nightmare when it comes to customer service. I am here to clear the air and tell you my experience.
My First Impressions With BILT. When I First Got my Card
When I initially set up my BILT account I was blow away by how easy it is. Firstly, I signed up for the card with an instant approval, and once I was approved, I was able to use my card digitally, immediately. Usually with credit cards you have to wait 1-2 weeks to receive the card before you can activate it and use it. Not the case with BILT. When I did receive it, I got the most luxurious and well put-together welcome package.
Setting up the Card. Setting up RENT WITH BILT
After receiving the card in person, which takes about a week to ship, you activate the full card benefits through the app with the information on the credit card to which you receive in your welcome package. For me, the reason I got the BILT card was due to rent. As is the case for most people. I clicked on the “pay rent tab” in the BILT app to set up rental payments and here’s where I found a bit of difficulty.
I pay rent through Venmo to my landlord. Unconventional to the typical pay by check or pay by online payment portal.
Here is what I did to set up Venmo with BILT. I used the unique routing number and account number given to be in the app to add a bank account to Venmo. The bank account registers as “EVOLVE BANK” so if you see that, you’re on the right track.
I then received 2 micro deposits over the course of 2 days, and deposited those micro deposit values into my verification form with venmo to verify the account.
Finally, I paid my landlord with venmo through the evolve bank.
SIDE NOTE: If you have BILTPROTECT Debt, when you venmo the money for your rent will not be taken from your credit line, but rather directly from your connected bank account set up in the app to make payments. This allows you to still venmo rent money but not have it affect your credit line.
My BILT Customer Service Experience
As mentioned before, setting up venmo with BILT rent payments was the toughest task here. Initially I emailed the support desk, which is the best way to reach the BILT team, and I received only an automated response within the day. Frustrating.
Buttttttt…..
I eventually received a full-on, human email response, from a BILT team member a day and a half later detailed all of the answers to my various questions. Not bad
Conclusion
Look I get it, BILT is a brand new company. But for a 1.5 billion evaluated company that works with credit cards and wants to seriously compete with Chase, Amex, and the likes, you need to have a 24/7 phone line that people always pick up. Email is simply not good enough for the credit card game. I love the BILT Mastercard, and I believe with a couple of tweaks, the BILT program will have zero hiccups for the foreseeable future.
